Hazard perception clips

Hazard Perception clips... Yep that part of the Theory Test that sneaks in with a sucker-punch after an hour of multiple choice questions. But is this part really as bad as you imagine it to be? Like many of the theory questions the hazard clips have logical, common sense outcomes which would be obvious if only you weren’t hyperventilating into a brown paper bag. Never mind, like the multiple choice questions, you will have about a minute with each clip which is not so bad.
So what is a hazard and why should you care? Well, a hazard (as defined in Roadcraft, the police drivers handbook) is anything which is an actual or potential danger and can be catagorised as (1) Physical features such as junctions, bends and less obvious, the road surface. (2) moving objects or persons such as drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. (3) Weather conditions leading to poor visibility, rain, fog etc and icy roads. As the clip plays out you watch it with the task of identifying a developing hazard that will ultimately force you, as the driver, to take some form of evasive action (altering speed, direction etc) See it? then click it. You have probably seen these hazards many times before as a passenger and sometimes you have probably even been the hazard. At the innocent age of eight I was the hazard when I ran out into the road from between some parked cars and got myself knocked over. The lollipop lady was less than a hundred yards further up the road. I know, I know but children will be children.
The nuts and bolts of the hazard perception part then; you will be presented with 14 clips (not all at once) there will be 15 hazards in total so one of those clips will contain two. The sooner you identify the hazard the higher your score, yey. Ok so that’s the two parts of the actual theory test briefly covered, hope you are still with me. Although you can find this material covered by various other institutes, what kind of a guide would I be if I left you to wander off into the internet wilderness prospecting for this stuff by yourself? You might get run over by a road virus on the internet super-highway, incidentally, you will encounter several of these road viruses in ‘The Demon Road: A Theory Test Novel' there they are known as Gawks, purchase on June 1st to find out why. (Shameless advertisement over) Next time, vehicle basic checks...
